Equal Pay Day 2010
Now is the time for the Paycheck Fairness Act
In these tough economic times, when an unprecedented number of women have become the breadwinner or co-breadwinner in their households, pay equity is needed not only for a family's economic self-sufficiency, but also for the nation's economic recovery. Data released by the U.S. Census Bureau showed that women continue to earn, on average, just 77 cents for each dollar earned by their male counterparts. Providing women the tools to challenge discrimination and reach greater pay equity is not only important to the success of working families but to the success of this country.
The Paycheck Fairness Act is comprehensive legislation that updates the Equal Pay Act of 1963, strengthens penalties courts may impose for violations of existing equal pay laws, prohibits retaliation against workers who inquire about or share wage information, and empowers women to better negotiate for equal pay. One year after the enactment of the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Restoration Act, activists are calling on the Senate to pass the Paycheck Fairness Act. It is the next step toward ending wage discrimination. Now is the time for its passage.
Contact your U.S. Senators now and urge them to move on the Paycheck Fairness Act now!
