Prominent Milwaukeeans Urge Mayor & Council: Appeal Paid Sick Days Ruling
- Local Chapter: Milwaukee
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: June 16, 2009
"Don’t Let the Big Mmac Steal Paid Sick Days, Represent Milwaukee Voters”
WHAT: On June 17, the Paid Sick Day Coalition will deliver a letter from Congresswomen Gwen Moore, Representative Barbara Toles, Representative Tamara Grigsby and 100 other prominent Milwaukeeans to Mayor Barrett, the Common Council, and our City Attorney. The letter urges an immediate appeal to the paid sick days ruling on June 12. Over 157,000 Milwaukeeans voted for this binding referendum last November. Currently, Wisconsin has the highest reported cases of H1N1 and Milwaukee is the most infected city in the state. No city elected official should be siding with the big MMAC or rewarding their lawsuit against the city.
WHY: MMAC lost on almost every point. The narrow ground on which the judge overturned the ordinance was the inclusion of domestic violence, even though many survivors take legal action in order to save their lives or their child's life. Congress is moving paid sick and safe day legislation forward -- the Mayor claims to support this federally BUT NOT in his own city.
WHERE: Milwaukee City Hall Rotunda
WHEN: THIS WEDNESDAY, June 17, 12:30PM
WHO: Milwaukee Voters and Letter Signers - Members of the Paid Sick Day Coalition
