Walker Signs Bill on Paid Sick Days
- Local Chapter: Milwaukee
MILWAUKEE -- It's been the subject of controversy, but something Governor Scott Walker says is necessary for the growth of the state. In a room filled with other legislators and Walker supporters, the governor signed the bill eliminating an ordinance that would give small business employees paid sick days.
"By signing this measure into law, we guarantee those businesses who want to build and create and grow here in the City of Milwaukee, they've got all the tools possible," the governor said.
Walker says under family medical leave, employees are already being well taken care of.
Dana Schultz of the 9 to 5 National Association of Working Women says signing the bill disregards employees.
The governor says the state is quote "On a roll".
"The trend we see in Wisconsin is that we're leading not only the region, but one of the leading states in the country when it comes to coming out of the recession," said Walker.
Walker says 70% of Milwaukee voted to have paid sick days, but thinks most of those people weren't fully aware of the consequences.
"The fact that Governor Walker signed the bill couldn't be a more visual statement of his priorities to corporate donors over Milwaukee voters," said Schultz.
Governor Walker says this signing not only moves Milwaukee forward, but the entire state of Wisconsin.
Organizations like 9 to 5 have vowed to keep fighting for workers' rights.
