9to5 National Association of Working Women
- Local Chapter: California
On March 10, for Women’s History Month, the Los Angeles Chapter of 9to5 National Association of Working Women, raised hundreds of dollars for the Haitian women’s organization LAMBI Fund for Haiti, by showing the film Poto Mitan.
Poto Mitan is a compelling document of the lives of 5 courageous Haitian women that offers in-depth understanding of Haiti. Its focus on women subjugation, worker exploitation, poverty, and resistance demonstrates the global struggles of women everywhere. Finally through their collective activism, these women demonstrate that despite monumental obstacles in a poor country like Haiti, collective action makes change. “After seeing all depressing news about Haiti, it was great to see some positive images of women standing up to lift their community”, said participant Maya Anderson.
“A lot of the struggles that Haitian women are facing, American women are facing as well. It really touches me to know that women everywhere are standing up for themselves and are trying to recognized as equals”, said member Monica Mitchell.
Los Angeles 9to5, National Association of Working Women, is a grassroots membership-based organization dedicated to continue to promote equality and fairness in the workplace for women; especially low wage women. Its vision is an economically just world where poverty and discrimination have been eliminated, the contributions of women are recognized and valued, and all women and their families thrive.
