Li Shuang Li waited tables six days a week in a San Francisco Chinatown restaurant where workers were yelled at for carrying only one pot of tea in each hand.

She had no health insurance, sick days or vacation. There were three servers for a restaurant that sat 80. Shifts could last 10 hours.

In the Press: Paid Sick Days Campaign

El Observador, 04/08/2011 -

According to 9to5, there are almost 6 million workers in the State of California that do not have access to paid sick leave, which is to say they cannot take time off to attend to their own health or the health of their family members. This represents 40% of the work force in California.

This alarming situation is leading unions to organize.  This past April 2nd 9to5 held a regional leadership conference to address this issue, which concerns many of labor organizations.

The Supreme Court has agreed — ominously -- to consider derailing a sex-discrimination lawsuit against the giant retailer Wal-Mart. If the justices rule that the class-action suit can't go forward, Wal-Mart employees may not be the only ones to be denied a meaningful day in court.

Friday, May 14, 2010 -- California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger unveiled a revised $83.4-billion budget plan that would eliminate the state's welfare-to-work program (CALWorks), most child care for the poor, and cut one third of the funding for in-home healthcare for the elderly and disabled. 

Monica Mitchell, 9to5 Los Angeles intern, was interviewed by KABC-TV Los Angeles Channel 7 for the 6 o'clock news, at a noon rally at the Governor's L.A. Office.   9to5 joined other groups in the Health and Human Services Network of California to take a stand for a fair budget.
