Job Opening: Project Organizer-San Jose CA

9to5, National Association of Working Women seeks a part-time, short-term project organizer for its San Jose chapter.  9to5 is a grassroots membership organization, founded in 1973, which strengthens women’s ability to work for economic justice.  Our goals are to build leadership among low wage working women and to win improvements in workplace and public policy.  This project will focus on a wage theft campaign in Santa Clara County.

 

San Francisco Enacts New Law to Stop Wage Theft

On September 16, 2011, San Francisco became the latest U.S. city to enact stricter penalties for employers who violate minimum wage and overtime laws and who illegally deny workers their due wages.

Editors Note: Filmaker Victoria Linssen has produced a powerful documentary about the struggle of Grocery Workers in California. Cathy Deppe, 9to5 organizer and other community leaders in Los Angeles are featured.

"Ralphs we demand!" screams Rigo Valdez into the megaphone. “Contracts” screams back the crowd.” Despite the yelling and screaming back and forth, the crowd seemed almost upbeat as they marched towards the Ralphs grocery store in downtown Los Angeles. Some danced, some cheered, some shared their stories and their fear of economic insecurity.

Ventura County, California Grand Jury Investigates Workplace Bullying

The Ventura County Star reported last week that the Ventura County Grand Jury concluded that workplace bullying is a growing problem in county government offices.  This statement is the result of a year-long investigation after receiving complaints from county workers last year.

Key Win for California Domestic Workers

Domestic workers in California achieved a major victory earlier this month.  On June 2, the California State Assembly passed the Domestic Workers Bill of Rights by a vote of 49 to 28.  The bill will now be voted on by the State Senate.
