- Local Chapter: Atlanta
Human Rights Atlanta Art Exhibit Opening and Reception “Visualize Rights Atlanta” (VRA) on Human Rights Day from 5-7pm on Saturday, Dec. 10, 2011 at Auburn Avenue Library in Recognition of the 63rd Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights
Human Rights Atlanta (HRA) will open an art exhibit related to the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) on Dec.10, 2011 coinciding with ‘International Human Rights Day’ and celebrating the 63rd anniversary of the UDHR - with the Opening Reception going from 5pm - 7pm at Auburn Avenue Research Library. The exhibit will remain open to the public through January of 2012.
Organizations and individual artists selected one article of the UDHR for ‘Visualize Rights Atlanta’ and created a related piece of art. The pieces in varied media, from painting, video, sculpture, and performances, will visually express the significance of universal declared human rights. Each of the 30 UDHR articles is interpreted through the artist’s experiences and personal visions. In the end, a wide variety of art representing over 30 Atlanta area groups, organizations and artists will be on display to celebrate Human Rights.
The ‘Visualize Rights Atlanta’ exhibit will enable the community to visit, enjoy, and learn about the most significant representation ever devised regarding universal basic Human Rights by global process and accord.
As noted by the United Nations on the UDHR 60th Anniversary: “Drafted by representatives of all regions and legal traditions, the UDHR has stood the test of time and resisted attacks based on “relativism”. The Declaration and its core values, including non-discrimination, equality, fairness and universality, apply to everyone, everywhere and always. The UDHR belongs to all of us.”
The United States is not only state signatory party to this convention on Universal Human Rights, but historically was an instrumental part of its drafting, represented by Eleanor Roosevelt, and worked hard for its eventual promotion and efforts for worldwide adoption.
HRA also has released the flowing public service announcement:
“Celebrate Human Rights Day with art and fellowship! ‘Visualize Rights Atlanta’ brings together organizations and individuals for a unique community art show. Sponsored by Human Rights Atlanta, the show features artwork inspired by articles of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, personalized to represent local efforts and struggle. The opening reception will be held on International Human Rights Day, Saturday, December 10th from 5 to 7 PM at the Auburn Avenue Research Library, located at 101 Auburn Ave NE in downtown Atlanta. The reception will include live music, poetry readings, and a keynote address by Dr. Akinyele Umoja. Art will remain on display at the Auburn Avenue Research Library throughout December.
